It’s been a week. A really, looooooong week.

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll already know why.

Here in the Fraser Valley we rarely get any significant snowfall, so when it started lightly snowing last Friday morning, everyone figured we’d have a day or two of slushy roads, not almost a metre of snow and a week full of snow days. When we went to bed on Friday night, there was a few cm of snow on the ground and I figured it would wash away the next day. But this is what we woke up to:

What we woke up to on Saturday morning (l) and then on Sunday morning (r).

By the time the weekend was over, we had over 80cm of snow on the ground. School was cancelled on Monday & Tuesday which made sense because the roads in our neighbourhood was completely impassible and wasn’t plowed until late Tuesday night. The kids weren’t complaining and it was nice to have them home for a couple of days to catch up on housework and have some fun outside since we really couldn’t go anywhere.

When school re-opened on Wednesday, buses still weren’t running as not all of the roads were clear, but we all figured that was it and we’d be back to normal the next day… until Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning. Now we had a huge ice storm here a few years ago and basically lost power for 72 hours, so I started getting all the candles and flashlights ready, and made a quick trip to the grocery store for supplies.

Wednesday afternoon, the snow returned, followed by the freezing rain later that night. Thursday morning we awoke to a thick layer of ice on EVERYTHING. We were among the lucky ones that only had our lights flicker a few times, while others (like my sister) had their power out for over 24 hours. All of the highways into the interior were shut down and people spent the night in their cars.

Again we were housebound, and while the ice wasn’t great to play in or drive on, it was beautiful.

School was cancelled Thursday & Friday, and since this upcoming Monday is Family Day here in BC, the kids will basically have been out of school for 9 out of the last 10 days. I’m starting to go a little stir crazy, but at least the house is clean and I’m getting some work done on the blog!
