Even though this blog has been up and running for a few years now, I haven’t really focused on it AT ALL.  My page views mainly come from a few DIY tutorials I transferred over from my photography website that went somewhat viral, but that’s about it.

I’ve decided to refocus my energy away from my thriving photography business to see if I can actually make this blog a source of real income. Why? Even though I love photography, the endless hours of editing and weekends spent at weddings really takes away from family time.

I’m considering this a fresh start. I figured I may as well document my progress so anyone else at the same point can follow along.

Where I’m At

Visitors  – 3,706 (average of 124/day)

June was my lowest visitor rate of 2017 by far. I’ve been averaging above 5k visitors per month since 2015.

Since a few of my articles are seasonal, I tend to get little spikes of traffic around them (Easter is a big one for me). I will take this into account and work on making some seasonal articles for upcoming holidays.

Monthly Income for June 2017  (Don’t Laugh!!!)

Google Adsense – $8.26

Etsy – $55.50

So yes, a grand whooping total of  $63.76

Now for the purposes of this post, I am not including my income from my successful photography business, which is where I make my actual living.

All of that Adsense & Etsy income is completely passive income where I don’t have to do anything and it just comes in.

Goals for July/August

I’ve lumped the summer together because my kids are off school and I know I won’t be able to get as much done as I normally could when they are in school all day.

Blog

In 2015 I had thrown a couple posts on here that I transferred over from my photography site that was bringing in a large amount of traffic, but that’s about it. Since then, I’ve been getting around 5,000 views on this page a month, which isn’t great, but isn’t too shabby.

From those views, I get my tiny amount of Adsense income, but I’m ok with it because it basically covers my monthly hosting fees.

My current goal is to try and double my average daily views by September, so about 300/day or 10,000/month.

My ULTIMATE goal is to get 100,000 views/month, but I’m aiming for that sometime in 2018, probably by this time next year.

How am I going to do that? Well the most important thing is for me to add more content. I want to try to add 2-4 new posts a week over the summer, and then pin the heck out of them.

Pinterest

Pinterest is BY FAR my greatest source of traffic, I have over 5k followers on there between my accounts. I will be focusing a lot of my effort to grow that by signing up for both Board Booster & Tailwind accounts and trying to pin at least 10 pins a day, preferably 2-3 times that, in addition to pinning articles from my site.

I am also hoping to grow my following by requesting to join a number of relevant group boards.

Etsy

I get a large amount of my passive income from my Etsy shop. I’ve read enough articles to know that you can’t make a living from traffic & advertising alone, (at least not at the beginning), so I highly recommend finding your passion and see where it takes you. Maybe it’s selling items on Etsy, or writing an ebook. Personally, I sell mainly photography templates & actions that are purchased by other photographers, as well as some printable art for kids’ rooms. I will be working to add at least one template or art piece to the site a week.

Most of my income on Etsy is passive, which means I upload it once and folks can download it on a continuous basis – basically it takes care of itself. I do have a few items that aren’t passive, such as the listings where I edit photos for folks. I do turn those listings on and off depending on my schedule and how busy I am, so they were turned off for the last few months of school and while we got into the swing of summer, but I’ve turned them back on since I have a little down time.

Affiliates

I just signed up for a ShopStyle account, will be doing a few articles featuring some of my favorite products and pinning like crazy.

I’m a huge Amazon Prime fan, and I signed up for an affiliate account a while back but I haven’t really focused much on this aspect. I need to work on that.

Bluehost is who hosts my wordpress blog, and their prices are great. I totally recommend checking them out if you are thinking of starting your own blog, especially because they currently are having a birthday sale!

I am also looking into signing up for other companies that I have an interest in. As I write more articles I’m sure I’ll figure out what those are, or maybe they’ll find me.

Youtube

I’ve uploaded a few videos that have done fairly well, and I think we want to start doing more. I’ll probably focus on Photography tutorials, and maybe transform part of my studio into a place to film toy reviews by the kids. I’m not sure I’m ready for the world of Vlogging, but I’ve been told it’s something we should try.
